There are two classic events in Kajiki, Aira city. They are The Drum Dance(太鼓踊り) and Spider Fight(くも合戦).
Taiko-odori is traditional dance and playing that garnished people with showy clothing and traditional drums make procession. In the Edo era, epidemic sick is raging in Edo and player to the Buddha and dance saved people from the sick. Then, Duke Yoshihiro Shimazu let liege to master. It is said that this is origin. Now, the event is popular with child to adult.
Spider Fight : In the late 16th Century, Yoshihiroko Shimazu, feudal lord of Satsuma, took many soldiers from Kajiki to enter the Bunroku-Keicho war in the Korean Peninsula. Kajiki Spider Fight is said to to have started when Yoshihiroko pitted Kogane spiders (female) ageinst each other to boost the morale of his soldiers on the front line. This cultural asset has been passed down from the time when Kajiki was the castle town of Yoshihiroko's to the present.
Spider Participation Rules
(1) Each person must have 3 spiders. (The spiders must be female Kogane spiders.)
(2) If a spider wins 3 matches in a row it moves on to the Championship Division.
(3) If a spider loses a match, it is out of the tournsment.
Determining the Winner
(1) Thespider that wraps the opponents rear-end (called "don" in Kajiki) in its white string wings. (Fig.1)
(2) The spider that bites the opponents rear-end (don) wins. (Fig.2)
(3) The spider that cuts off the string of the hanging opponent wins. (Fig.3)
(4) If a spider is not willing to fight the match will end in draw.
+ Due to the quick speed of the spider's movement, the split-second action of the match is judged by the sharp, keen eye of an expert referee.
